As far as i know, Xp has no 32 or 64bit versions... so if i downgrade to XP, can i gat 4GB without worrying about buying Vista 64-bit? Thanks

You don't need a 64-bit OS to run a system with 4GB of RAM.

Yes but it won't be able to address all the memory. And i've heard of some hankey pankey way that only works 50% of the time. That doesn't' seem to be a real fix.

Windows XP Professional x64 is XP's 64-bit version that will address all 4 GB. Other versions can use PAE - Physical Address Extension - to address more than 3.25 GB, but I can't vouch for how well it works.

XP Pro x64 isn't as good with reliability or compatibility as regular XP, and from what I've heard Vista x64 is more reliabile and compatible than XP x64 (though still not as reliable/compatible as Vista x86 [32-bit] or regular XP).

Amazon has XP Pro x64 listed for $140. Vista Home Premium x64, by comparison, is listed at $111.50. Vista Business x64, the direct competitor to XP Pro x64, is $150.

the above post guys got something, for $10 more vista buisness is more worth your money. I myself am upgrading my ram not my os to 4gb. i run xp 32bit i decided to get (2) 2gb sticks for like $70 atr newegg.com, even though I can only use 3.3 in my dell e1705, i did so to keep my ram dual channel, even though the difference is marginal, as cheap as it was, why not? 3.3gb of ram amounts to alot in xp, cause it doesnt eat ram for breakfeast like vista. 3.3gb in vista though is still alot, 32 bit operating systems wont become obselete until ram use has exceded the 3.3gb limit for everyday computing. I upgraded my ram simply cuz I could and I do a little video editing as well as convert alot of files, I think 3.3gb will be overkill for me as it is, even if I had vista. Thats alot of ram. A small thing to think about, if u get a 64bit os be it xp or vista, newer games will take advantage of the 64bit-ness, though it wont help much. If you go 64bit also make sure all devices you use have 64bit drivers for the os you choose. I don't think its worth it to go 64bit.........yet.
