Hi,
I am using XP Pro SP2 with a Dell M1210 laptop. I set the power settings to "Always on" as I like the 100% CPU at all time feature (I cant figure any way to make it not slow itself down).
I then went into the advanced power settings & enabled hibernation. Then I changed the setting to "When I close the lid" -- Hibernate.
Why doesnt it hibernate when the lid is closed. It worked just fine with Vista (the hibernate when the lid is closed, restart when the lid is opened).
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rich

Do you have at least x GB free on your C drive (where x is equivalent to your RAM)? If you were able to click 'Enable Hibernation', you should, but check to make sure.

IF you have 1 or more GB of RAM, take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909095

I do have 2 gigs of ram, the hard drive has 50 gigs of free space & the hibernation has been enabled.
I will try the patch listed but I am not getting any error message. I close the lid of the laptop & I can see the sceen is still lit up. Closing the screen doesn't seem to do anything.
thanks

There may be an open program that prevents your computer from hibernating.
Restart the computer. Immediately after rebooting, try to hibernate.
If you can't, it's something in your startup.
If you can, it's a program you open later that's giving you trouble. -
For whatever reason, when I shut the lid, the laptop will reboot. No error messages, nothing else. This is a fresh XP Pro installation with nothing added, no AV, nothing at all.
The settings are correct in the power management part of the control panel.
Any other ideas? -
Under the advanced option of power schemes, it should offer you options on what to do when you press the power button, press the sleep button, or close the lid. Try changing those.

Ok, so now I am seeing things a little differently. I set the button for power on.off to hibernate. When I press that button I get a BSOD. The strange thing is that the hibernation works just fine on this same laptop with Vista.

Sounds like something wasn't installed properly when you installed the OS. Perhaps some files didn't copy from the CD into the Windows directory. I would reinstall the OS.

The error message (which is a BSOD that flashes before a reboot). Does say something about a physical memory dump. I am running a hard drive test now. How do I test the memory (ram)?
-
Memtest, I believe.

try to run this and change "when I close the lid...":
XP wont hibernate when the lid is closed?
