I just returned a new Gateway T-6815, after failing to get XP to work on it properly (no screen backlight, and no sound).

So, I am wondering what currently sold laptop models (preferably of about the same size, i.e. fairly light and under $800) have been successfully "downgraded" to XP?

Whatever you have, if you bought it in the last 6 months and XP works on it. Help would be very much appreciated, as trial and error is getting a bit tedious.

I believe the new Inspirons and Vostros come with XP as an option.

I probably should qualify this by saying I am looking for something that I can pick up at Best Buy/Circuit City/any other store today. I know, it's a random constraint, but I have to be on the road in 2 days and need an XP machine (stuff happens). Dell seems to take at least a week to ship. It would have been an easy way out, for sure.

I recently purchased a DELL Studio 17" laptop only to find out that it is absolutely not compatible with Windows XP. The laptop will halt installation at the very beginning with a blue screen and a Microsoft error message.
This is very disheartening for two reasons:

1.) It seems as though Microsoft is once again bullying it's way to force customers to use what they deem neccessary (Vista) (from a pure architechture standpoint there is absolutely no reason for a PC compatible laptop to not accept XP in fact every "PC compatible" computer should be able to run XP without trouble)

2.) The DELL Studio 17" laptop is the most elegant PC laptop that I have seen so far across the brands.

I ended up having to return the Laptop to DELL after having spent almost 3 hours with them on the phone only to find out that it is indeed entirely incompatible with Windows XP, according to DELL (never even mind the device drivers at this point, because the Laptop simply will refuse to load XP. Period.)

So if you would like to use windows XP over VISTA (which I do), then the
DELL Studio 17 is not for you....

Configuration of "my" DELL Studio 17:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache)
    - 17" high resolution (1920*1200) glossy display
    - Dell 1390 wireless N mimi card
    - bluetooth 2.0
    - Broadcom Gigabit network
    - 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 3650
    - 2Gb Dual channel DDR2 RAM
    - Single 250Gb SATA Hard drive
    - DVD/CD ROM / burner
    - Dell 1510 Wireless-N Card
    - Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Internal (2.0)
    - Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD Software Edition
    - Integrated Finger Print Reader
    - back lit keyboard
