I currently have a license for both OSes and I was wondering what opinions there are on which to install on a new laptop. I've ordered a D901C from Eurocom without an OS and I'm set to receive it soon. My specs are in the sig.

The purpose of this laptop will be mostly for a portable gaming rig but will need driver support for the WLAN and internal webcam. I'm leaning towards installing xp64 since the processor is 64bit and it will be able to use the 4gig but only if it can handle the peripherals. I'm not looking move to Vista until as least SP1 since it's still pretty buggy. So, what do you think would be the best OS to go with? Would dual boot make sense too? Would I be able to use the Vista64 drivers for the WLAN and webcam???

Thanks in advance for the input.

Take a look at Eurocom's driver site. If they have XP x64 drivers, THINK about installing x64. Otherwise, don't touch it. If your main purpose is gaming, I'd really stick with XP32, anyway. XP 64 has had compatibility issues from the beginning with games.

    At best, I would dual-boot XP 32 and 64.

I just thought of one more thing to consider. When I do make the jump to Vista I would want to go to Vista 64. I remember hearing that in order to do an upgrade to the 64 version you would need to have XP64 because you wouldn't be able to do it with XP32. Is that everyones understanding as well?

From what I've seen, upgrading to Vista 64 from XP64 requires a clean install, anyway, and that's really the best way to go. You can certainly do a clean install to upgrade to Vista 64

Yes, a clean install is the way to go....you really do not want to do an actual upgrade in any case. You don't want to hear this probably, but I would eBay the XP and go to Vista 64. I used it for 7 months and no problems running my games, I guess the oldest I ran was Disciples II (2002). But if you're determined to stay with XP, I'd do the 32 for that one.

I agree; if you want 64-bit capabilities, Vista's implementation is supposed to be much better. Sell the XP64 license.

Agreed...XP64 got so little developer support it's not even funny.
