trying to combine a movie file (avi) with a subtitle (srt) file into an Mpeg-2 file.....

When i try to combine the movie with subtitles (using Xilisoft), the subtitles don't work even when turned on. Any suggestions?

    dont use xilisoft

use mp4box (gui Yamb) to make a .mp4
or MKVMerge (part of MKVtoolnix) to make a .mkv

Isnt Mpeg2 a native DVD format? For that you need to use a dvd authroing tool and image based subtitles like the DVD's use. It cant use .srt files they are text based for computer like media players.

If any program can convert the subs for you subtitleworkshop probably can.

It was part of my suggjestion, do not use xilisoft for that one thing giving you a problem.

When it comes to this stuff the open source community provides many free tools that are often much better than the paid stuff.

For dvd authoring if your not doing anything really complicated and just want to convert a file to dvd look at something called dvdflick.

Of all the programs out there it has never failed me to convert a movie from any time to native DVD and give me the best quality. It should also have the subtitle support and be smart enough to tell you the subtitle type is not valid or maybe even convert it for you.

Why not try Handbrake? Free and has an import .srt option to adding subtitles. It's only converts to .mp4 and .mkv however.

Exactly see the above, any good muxer can use .srt for those containers but for MPEG2 he needs to convert it back into a DVD format.

Subtitle workshop is the most versatile program I can think of if anything can convert it (for free) that is what I would try first.

With DVD its embeded right in the .IFO file though I think.

Edit - Yep its in the .IFO so this is what you need to do.

Use Tx2Sup to convert from srt to sup http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareTxt2Sup.php?b2=1

Then use IfoEdit to edit them into the DVDs .IFO file - http://www.ifoedit.com/

If your authoring your own dvd the dvd program may take the .sup file directly and do that part for you.
