I am in desperate need for help! I found a virus on my computer today and deleted it from the registry and the windows/system32 directory. When I rebooted, the welcome screen appears and it shows all of my profiles. However, when I click any of my profiles, it starts to load the profile and says loading settings, then immediately says logging off. The profile never comes up. It appears that Windows is working but I can't get into a profile.

Now I booted into safe mode and it did the same thing on my Administrator profile. I even tried "reload last good know configuration" with no luck either.

What do I need to do???

    Please help.

    Thanks
    Marty

Will it retain my previous profiles and settings? Does Windows XP home edition have a recovery option on the CD when I re-boot? What's the easiest way of redoing this to keep all my files and old profile settings?

When you put the disc on your drive, select the repair option.

If it doesn't work, it is perhaps the time to change to Vista.

Can I repair XP home eddition with the XP pro CD? If so, will it save my remaining profiles?

    Thanks again,

    doubt it.

you may need to do a full re install. you will lose all settings and files. this is why backing things up on to an external drive is so important.

Is there a system file repair on a XP home edition CD before I reload the whole OS?

Also, if I do end up reloading the OS, will it automatically remove all my previous documents?

yes there is a repair but it is pretty doubtful that it will work. give it a try. if it dosent help you need to reinstall.

I've reinstalled Windows XP Pro and still retained not only my old user profiles but still had access to the files and folders from those old profiles. So in essence all the pirated games/music/movies i had and thought i was gonna lose were still intact and in working order. I don't remember exactly what selectons i made at the installation screen..i believe that i did do a full format too...but anyhow if i had to do it again i will definelty know what to do by seeing my choices on screen.

There is no way you did a full format if you retained those files and settings. I am 100% sure you selected "R" to repair windows rather than perform a new installation from scratch. The repair installation looks exactly the same after that initial blue screen, so that's probably why you thought you did a full new installation.

To the OP, the best and easiest solution really is to format the drive and do a new installation of Windows. It only takes 45 minutes or so. To get the data you want to save you have two options (that I know of). The first is to use the drive externally and pull all the data off via another computer. The second option is to resize the partition & create a second partition from the space. Use a live cd like BartPE or Ubuntu to move the data from one partition to another.

I think i'll give it another go this weekend and see...if i'm up for it...but am pretty sure i did a full format. And i know it sounds crazy but hey...i'll see again to be sure...maybe i was halucinating...who knows!

Edit: I do have stuff on their that i can lose..so this should make it even more interesting
