I have a new hp dv4000 with Xp home edition. I have a copy of xp pro I could use if I needed to, but first what would be an advantage of xp pro that I can't get from home. Second is it worth the trouble of formatting and starting over when all I had to do is delete some aol crap and hp shortcuts to keep xp home and I haven't noticed a difference yet from Pro.

    Thanks

Unless you are in a heavily networked environment, I doubt you'll notice a difference. You might want to format just to get rid of all the junk HP puts on there.

Yeah, that 'bloatware' that manufacturers such as Dell and HP pre-load onto new PC's is really annoying. Formatting will make you much happier.

Yeah, and a lot faster! Pro really is just to sign on to a network like at a school or a small/large business. Home is just fine. But if you just have the cd laying around, go for it.

Also going into msconfig and turing off programs that start with Windows and are unneeded like Adobe Speed Reader or RealPlayer will help speed things up a bit.

I'd recommend formatting the entire HDD and load XP Pro from scratch. This way, everything (junk) will be removed and you start with a clean system. Install only the drivers needed for the hardware to work and then you can start loading the software you want.

I did this with my HP notebook and I increased the battery runtime. All the extra background processes and software was just draining the battery. I think after the reload, I got an extra 20+ mins of runtime.
