Well, I know I am not saying this correclty and it sounds more alarming than it is. WHat happenes when I turn on the computer is that it loads up to the point were I have to select a user (in my case "Administrator") before it will continue to load. It did not used to do this (I think). I am the only user... I presume that somehow some setting were changed, either by me without realizing it or some software I have downloaded (only mainstream stuff... Quick-time, Real Player --- though I unilstalled that, Turbo Tax.... and software for my new HP Printer, which downloade3d a lot of stuff in addition to just the printer drivers. -- Will have to clean that up.)

Anybody got any suggestions as to what I can do to have the computer fully load without my having to click on "administartor"?

    I can't figure

start> control panel> user accounts> change the way users log on or off> uncheck use the welcome screen. That should just about do it. sorry it took 13 minutes for someone to reply, i had to grab a beer.

Sorry... that didn't do it... All that did was change what the page looked like that I still had to sign in as an administrator and it put in an extra step of asking for a password.

Isn't there a way that the computer will just turn on and go straight to the fully loaded screen? I am new to XP even though it has been around for a few years... This is a new laptop. And I am pretty sure when I turned it on, it would fully load with out my having to click on administrator... at least until a few weeks ago...

Somehow the setting for "autologon" got changed on your computer. You'll have to switch it. One way to do it is through the registry (mildly complicated)...

Maybe someone knows another way, but I'm pretty sure this is your problem.

Are you sure you were logging as Admin before? You can use Tweak to log you in automatically.

you probably have disabled xp auto logon. to reenabled it you can use "tweakui" microsoft powertoy. install it. when you open tweakui, click "logon" and then check the "logon automatically at system start up". this will solve your problem.

Thanks everyone. I tried ot reverse the first suggestion, which only reverted XP sign on to the "classic" one... which sucks. I not only still stuck with the load stopping at admin but when it goes into standby, it comes back in "classic mode" even though I undid the previous change.

I will try the various suggestions made here and will report. Thanks again.... :)

Did you try this? This is specifically for the auto logon issue.

It worked!!!! Thanks everyone.... I'll see what happens when it goes on standby now and then comes back. I put in nothing for the password for the admin.

Query-- I used the method suggested by Kegobeer. Afterwards I went to the site suggested by ttupa : the Elder Geek... The registry approach seems a little raw. But I looked at the PowerTools and Tweak. Does that do it differently than the method proposed by Kegobeer... and what are the advantages of each?

And off-topic but should I download powertools? I am new to XP (yeah, I know... just as it is about to get old with Vista)
