    My scenario...
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1520 that came with Vista Home Premium already loaded. I'm trying to get XP to co-exist. I've been able to shrink the drive, partition the new volume, insert the XP cd and begin the installation which obviously copies files to the drive first, then reboots to actually start the install. Well after only maybe 5 minutes the install stops in its tracks with this error message:

    Fatal Error
An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing
One of the components that Windows needs to continue Setup could not be installed
    Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Now this has happened exactly the same with each of the 5 attempts at this installation with 2 completely different OEM XP Pro cd's! Can anyone shed some light on what is causing this error let alone how to get past it?!?

The error means that something in the data has changed from what was on the disc and when it was transferred to the hard drive. in other words an error has occurred when windows is copying the files to the hard drive. Have you tested the dvd/cd drive under normal use before, it may be your problem.

he means you likely have a bad (or dirty) xp install cd

that said, installing XP after VISTA is not the easiest way to go

Wogstaa - thank you for your suggestion. I have since tried it and ran diagnostics and it passed just fine. So I have issues elsewhere. Any further suggestions?

Hi gerryf19, I thought the very same thing, thinking that my XP Pro cd was corrupted. I went and bought another XP Pro cd and this has the same error happen at the same place. That is why I'm posting for help here...

Do you have two sticks of ram? Remove one. Try the install. If it fails, remove the remaining stick and reinsert the first stick. Try the install

Hi gerryf19, seems like a last resort option. I'm going to try a few other things before I break the seal on the notebook - Thanks!
