HP only lets you make them once, don't know about other manufactures.

It wont let you. If you want to make multiple copies then extract the image from the DVD and re-burn it on to another disc.

Yeah, I know, it's stupid. I don't understand why. The OS is tied to your machine so not like you can go sell it or anything.

I think Vaios will let you reburn them - at least it allowed me several attempts when it failed... (twice on DVD DL...)

On some HP machines it was possible to reset the marker that discs were already burned. Some occasions just deleting some files was needed, on newer machines a special software obtained from HP Support was used to allow re-creating the discs.

Easiest way to do multiple discs is to create image files, then burn them couple times and also store them on external disc as a third backup. However my friend's Acer Timeline did not allow image creation, only burning. So that approach does not work always.

Well, just burn the DVD and create your own image off that DVD to store.

Sony let you make as many Recovery Discs as you want but the Recovery Disc is model specific. It won't let you install in a different model.

In case with Sony, if it gets damaged you can:
    1. Make another one if the recovery partition is still intact.
    2. Use a spare copy if you make more than one copy.
    3. Buy from Sony if it is still available.
