Sorry if this topic has been beaten up over and over, but my laptop is coming today and I have three options for security services:

    Symantec

    McAfee

    Trend Micro

Any clear winner here? I know one thing from the fellow forum users here (thanks!), Norton that comes installed with my ASUS G1S is going bye bye... too bulky.

Just a quick question... I'm getting the Sony FZ140 and it too comes with a 60-day trial of Norton Anti-Virus. I do NOT want to keep it installed. Actually, the very first thing I plan to do when I turn my computer on for the first time is uninstall it. However, knowing what a b**** Norton can be sometimes, is it easy to uninstall or is it just going to crash and self-destruct, along with the whole computer?

I was a Norton/Symantec user for a long time, but it didn't seem to always contain and delete spyware/virii. So I tried McAfee.. that was good for time also, but both Norton and McAfee use a lot of system resources. I then found out about AVG and it was good, but didn't like the interface all so much. It also doesn't update as often as I'd like. Then I found out about this gem.. been around for some time now..
Very good scan/protection engine, updates quite frequently and has a good interface. I'm using it on my Vista box and XP box, both are running flawlessly. Now if only Comodo can come up with a firewall solution for Vista, i'd be a happy camper. The current firewall solutions for Vista are limited and not so great.

My favourite is not in the list -> Microsoft OneCare :D

(my package is free, ZoneAlarm firewall, Avast Anitivirus and Ad-Aware SE.)

If you uninstall Norton, no it will not self destruct, will not crash etc. The only thing you need to know is that Norton does not uninstall cleanly sometimes, and need to download the removal tool.

Since it comes with Norton 2007 anyway, give it a try for a week or two. There's nothing wrong with Norton in its detection and cleanup rates. Previous versions were bulky and slowed down your system a lot, but this has supposedly been addressed with the 2007 version. Then again, I've never been masochistic enough to try out the 2007 trial version to test that theory myself so :p

Otherwise, I'd suggest eset or kaspersky

My new lappy came with NIS 2007 pre-installed, the free 90 trial is up in a few weeks, I will renew my subscription...and it is not heavy on resources IMO.

I believe that older versions were resource hogs, but the new one is great and has an excellent interception/catch rate according to the test sites/labs.

Don't be swayed by out of date info. Give the Norton a try, if you don't like it, try something else.

Eset NOD32 is the best. Performs better than all those and uses less system resources to do it.

i'm using the AVG antivirus, eventho my laptop was installed with the Mc Affee antivirus, but i had bad experience with this antivirus, so just don't want to take another risk loosing my datas again... maybe you can try Norton, eventho i don't like how their antivirus work...

Using symantec at my office, seems nice... not so many problem... only cost money... so i don't want to buy anymore antivirus for my personal use... :) but about the ZoneAlarm, eventho so many people like to use it... but i don't recommend such software, only wasting my resource, but that my personal opinion... :)
