well there seems to be an endless number of security flaws as shown at the Black Hat Conference earlier this month.

Microsoft really do need to go through a lot more develoupement and testing, and that is far from Complete.

I reckon Vista will be released sometime in the Fourth Quarter of 2007, so that they can release the new Operating System in time for the Christmas season. I reckon the hardware companies will roll out their new products at around the same time Windows Vista is released. bearing in mind the new Dx10 and nVidia working on the G80 GPU, as well as new Wireless technologies, 2007 is going to be a huge year for Mobile Computing sector in my opinion.

Pretty sure it will be out by May next year. They've been delaying so long now. They're ready to put it out, then they can patch what needs patching. Besides, I already have my copy of Vista Ultimate earmarked...don't want to wait a year. It'll be the OS of choice for my new Core2 desktop.

What they should do as far as completeness and what they will do are completely different things. They should probably hold onto it for another two years to do thorough testing and get most of the features they initially intended in. But instead we'll see a buggy release around April, imo, with a service pack within 8 months. So the first release that's actually approaching ready to use will be late 2007 with SP1.

I read an article not long ago, claiming that Beta 2 was buggier than any previous MS beta, and nowhere near ready to be RC1. Now that does not jive with what many others have said, but it still is scary. Vista is the 3000 lb gorilla on MS' back right now and has been since they announced a total rewrite. I say Q2 2007, maybe Q3.

I think it will be Q2 2007. I personally won't touch it until at least a year after it's released though.

I can't give you a timeframe for the release of Vista, but Satan will be ordering mittens before then... ;)

Last I heard, they were still committed to a Feb 2007 release. It's not like Microsoft has never released a bug ridden product before.

Were they even dreaming that it could be an RC1 ... that thing was sooo buggy that it made Win95 look good even today ;)

I wonder what a marketing problem it would be for them. They were hoping for an OEM release by Nov. in time for the holiday season so that they cash in, like they did with the XBox last year. But with current state of things ... although M$ is known for releasing buggy products, so it wouldn't be a first.

I am still hoping that a delay might bump in the WINFS file system, rather than it being offered as an "add on" later down the road. NTFS, while being good with respect to stability, isn't that great with regards to performance (FAT32 out perfoms it), and with Vista's extra features that can take a heavy toll on the filing system, WINFS will be a great addition.

My estimate of a STABLE OS, is no earlier than one year from now (3rd - 4th quarter '07) ... that doesn't mean Vista won't be out earlier :p

I'm saying Q2. Microsoft is shooting for a Q1 release, and they are going to try like hell to make that. It's been delayed for years now. But I think Q2 is when you'll really see it. Probably SP1 by Q3, maybe Q4. According to winsupersite.com, Microsoft is dead set on having it to businesses by November this year and January next year, but I just don't see that happening. Nor do I see it being a good idea. From what I've heard, build 5536 is quite good, and RC1 is expected to be pretty solid. But unlike most people, I have not had that many problems with Beta 2. Of course, I don't use it everyday either. I'm hoping RC1 (which is slated to come out in 2 weeks btw) will be good enough to become my everyday OS, but I'm not sure. We'll see.

Sorry to inform you, Qwester, but WinFS has been cancelled all together. No add-in later. They will be integrating some of it features elsewhere, but WinFS itself is officially dead.

WoW, when did this happen! Well I guess they are better of that way ... The "add-on" idea was crazy to say the least. How can a file system be an "add-on"! Although I still believe NTFS is no good and having a new FS should have been a top priority, not having all the cool looking interface and lame features.

    Thanx for the info :)

Ah well, the likelyhood of me using Vista for some serious work is near nill. And if I ever do it would be in a couple of years, maybe we will have Vista2 by then :p

Never should be an option on the poll but I got my hopes up for January 2007.

Since I cant afford any OS that I use, either free or given to me, odds are I wont be getting it until I buy new computer and get oem license, or work upgrades to it and gives me vlk. not likely in 2007.
