Hi, I'm running Vista Basic on a Vostro 1500 and I haven't been able to get my Zune working. When I plug the USB cable in, I receive the following message:
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
The Zune works fine on my XP desktop, so the problem lies not in the device or the cable. I have also tested all of my laptop's USB ports, and they all function properly.
I have reinstalled the Zune software multiple times, even using the UnZoone program to remove all traces of the earlier installation from my computer. I have also tried reinstalling the driver in Safe Mode, to no avail. The Zune shows up in Device Manager, but with the yellow error symbol next to the icon.
There is an apparent fix available that I can't attempt due to the limitations of Vista Basic:
1. Right-click My Computer
2. Click Manage
3. Click 'Local Users and Groups'
4. Double click Groups
5. Open up the Administrators group
6. Click Add
7. Click Advance and the Find
8. Double click on the LOCAL SERVICE user to add it to the Admin group
So I suppose my question is, does anyone know how to access the "Local Users and Groups" service via the command prompt or regedit? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which Zune software version is it?
-
Software: version 2.3.1338.0
Zune firmware is updated, too.
Edit:
Software: 2.3.1338.0
Windows Vista Basic SP1
Firmware: 2.3 (1145) Bootloader 435
Driver: 2.1.804.0 (10/31/2007) -
Bump.
Would manually installing the latest version of the driver help? Whenever I try to update with Device Manager, it says the driver is already up to date. -
OK, I found a possible command prompt workaround for adding the local service to the admin group without using group policy editor:
http://batcheero.blogspot.com/2007/08/adding-accounts-to-local-admin-group.html
Problem is, I don't know exactly what to enter after "net localgroup Administrators". I've tried variations of "local service" to no avail. Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm not especially tech-savvy.
Can anyone help?
Edit: Never mind, problem fixed. Turns out Comodo was preventing the driver from installing, so when I disabled it, everything started working. I know, I'm an idiot for not thinking of it sooner. Mods can lock this thread. -
i also cannot seem to get this zune software to install on my compaq/hp presario V6000 laptop. I'm running vista home basic, and I get the same error - zune software failed to install.
I'm a newbie, but not completely. how can I install this?
any help is greatly appreciated!! -
Is the installer corrupt?
-
no idea. I've downloaded the file from several different locations and tried them all, and I'm still at square 1.

OK, let me rephrase my issue: I can't get zune software to install AT ALL. I've tried customer service, and I have better luck talking to furniture. Or myself. Unfortunately, neither is getting this thing installed.
any advice? (and no, getting an ipod is not a possible alternative) -
I'd appreciate any guidance...
my apologies, I'm in class trying to look busy... -
Hmmm, I'm not sure what the problem is, do you have another computer to test the installer with?
