Not directly... will have to slipstream the hard drive sata drivers in the xp install or use an external floppy drive.

Not that hard to slipstream... nlite is what you want... I did not want to use this, but after research and speaking with others, I think it is a safe solution.... you can slipstream without nlite, but it takes a lot more steps.

Generally, being told that you "cannot" install a particular OS means that it is not supported and there are no drivers. Thus, while you certainly CAN install XP with some slipstreaming, you may not have your notebook's full functionality.

The good news- you can install XP on your HP Pavilion. You will have to find the drivers for all your hardware, but if your particular series was offered with XP at one time, they should be available to download from the HP site.

The bad news- You'll have to pay for it. XP Home retails for $100 and XP Pro is about $200, although OEM versions of both are available for less. OEM versions do not have technical support and are "married" to the system you install them on, but the price drops to $140 for XP Pro.

I bought an HP Pavilion dv9000t back in May and gave Vista Premium a chance for a few months. Then I packed it up, sent it back to Hell and installed XP Pro. I'm much happier now!

HP has a some notebook models where they did something to the BIOS to prevent other types of OS installation besides the recovery install. You can't even Dual boot or install a Clean install from a retail version of the same OS.

I found this out while doing research, because I was going to get a certain HP Pavilion model

This might be what your talking about, make sure you do research about the specific model HP model first.

Your research should have taken you to a process known as slipstream... which I mentioned in my first post... you can install xp onto an hp... just takes a couple more steps, which are not that hard if you follow the many guides on this site.

Most new notebooks you will have to slipstream or disable sata (which I've read has its own negatives)... Long story short: best to slipstream the drivers.

Go to this forum and visit the HP/Compaq section... on the first page.... at the top... it is a sticky at the top of the page... Really, you can't miss it...

When you visit new forums it is good to look around for a couple of minutes before posting... :)

I never heard of this. I tried to google it but got very vague info.

What does the drivers have to do with BIOS not letting you install anything else? I'm not talking about just any HP notebooks. I'm talking about certain recent models.

Maybe some models are mentioned in the HP section of NBR.
