    this is driving me nuts! i have repartitioned my hd. i'm installing a dual XP boot... everything works fine, but the wireless won't connect on the new XP installation. it says;

    windows was unable to find a certificate to log you onto the network.

    now, the router is configured the same in both versions of the OS. i can connect just fine with one installation (the old one), but the new one won't connect. can't figure this one out. help! i've tried both DHCP and static, nothing works. the router is a wr54g with wpa-psk network authentication and tkip encryption. my wireless card is a intel 4965. i'm using windows to configure the connection.

    i'm gonna bump this... so remember, this is two installations of XP on the same machine. same router, same wireless setup. on one installation (old one, the one i'm on now), i can connect to wireless fine. on the new installation, i get this 'windows was unable to find a certificate to log you onto the network' message. frustrating. what could be the problem here? i have checked to make sure the wireless cards are configured exactly the same. help!

    If you check your wireless network settings (not for the card itself, but for the SSID) you should find authentication information. It sounds like the machine is set to look for a certificate or other credentials to log you into a secure network. Make sure 802.11x authentication is turned off, and that you are not set to use PEAP or another certificate-based authentication.

    802 authentication is not available (greyed out) with wpa-psk. the whole authentication page is greyed out- unavailable. good idea, though.

    Are you trying to connect to the university network? If yes, you need to download their security certificate, I am unsure where you can get it for your university but I got my from the university's computer center website.

    thanks for the replies...

    dragonpet, i'm not trying to access a university network.

    crimsonman, i've tried DHCP and static IP configurations, and neither work. just keeps connecting, dropping, connecting, dropping. really weird considering i have another OS installation on the very same computer configured exactly the same way and it works fine.

    it goes from 'acquiring network address' to 'not connected'- just keeps cycling every couple seconds.

    edit: also tried intel/proset wireless. didn't work. eek.

    edit edit: forget it. i got so sick of the problem i formatted over the second XP installation. thanks for the help. i'll have to hope it's a installation problem and will not occur next time i reinstall. woot!
