That's the most tricky part of XP-Vista since as default you don't have to anything with XP and it works. But with Vista as default, you have to set this network connection as Private Network (in Network and Sharing Center) and check if file sharing is on below. Then Vista will be visible and accessible by others.

it is already as you said private network in vista and everything is ON except "password protected sharing"

okay then you'd better check if your share is set permission to "everyone" or not. If not, please add "everyone" in the list. Or you could add Map network drive (Tools >> Map Network Drive..) into my computer in XP and use different user (which has the privilege) to access. I guess it would be ok now.

    hope this help

the "everyone" is added for the share of the drive with all permissions checked.
also, i did the map network drive as you said. i can get to map it and show in my list of drives in xp but when i click on it, it says access denied... (i did connect with the username of the vista computer) ..

by the way i never set any passwords for my usernames (blank password field) does this affects the mapping maybe?

add the account from the computer you are using to the computer that you are trying to access. set it to full access.
