Hi all,
I'm trying to add a 1394a pci card to a newer Dell Optiplex 380. But when the system (windows 7 Pro) tries to install the driver it crashes each and every time. The error I get is:
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
*** The system has halted ***
Any help would be appreciated.

Possible that the 1394a card is damaged. Try another card or another computer to see if it produces the same error.
-
Might be the driver that it tries to install is messing up the problem. Try disabling automatic driver installation and install your own.

Boot in safe mode after finding the driver install from the manufacturer's website (hit F8 a bunch at boot). Install in safe mode. Open device manager, view hidden devices, make sure it is not still listed as an installed device. Remove it, if it is. Shut down, install the card, power on, enjoy firewire.

Thanks zhaden. Will give it a try.

OK the problem is there is no driver from the manufacturer. I've got one from Unibrain, but it won't install unless the card is in place and recognized. But every time I do that, even in safe mode, Windows will try to install the driver automatically and crash the system.

I'll try a different card, but I'm going to have to drive an hour to the next store to get one.
What I'm trying to do is to get video off a DV Camcorder onto the computer. It uses a cassette. If there's a more simple way to do this, let me know. -
Well, that bites. Your card is jank (the info the card itself gives to the computer is incorrect, telling it to send critical information here, as opposed to there, then crash because some other device is already using the here address that is wrong).
Does your camcorder have some kind of video out? It should be relatively easy to hook it in to a monitor or television, then re-record it with whatever DVR you wish. -
Well the card wasn't the problem. I got 2 new cards from Amazon. Same errors.
