Lately I've noticed that the address bar in explorer is adding an entry every time I access my external hd to listen to music or watch a movie. My commonly used websites such as nbr, ebay etc are being replaced with entries such as "J:\Music\SteelyDan\Can'tBuyAThrill" because I listened to a song from that album recently. This just started happening out of nowhere and I need to know how to fix it. There's probably an easy remedy, but I can't find it myself.

That would have to do something with the file history...
You can get rid of the entris by cleaning up your file histoy in Internet Explorer... -
thanks +rep, I'll try that.

I cleared out the history, cookies, etc and every time I play any media off my external it adds it to the address bar still. I have no idea why it would just start doing this, but it's very irritating. More rep for the next person to help out here!

The easiest remedy is to use other browser like Firefox/Chrome/Opera.

I appreciate the suggestion +rep, but I've used explorer for years and this didn't happen until now. There is something else going on, but I'll consider switching.

Have you installed windows search 4? It changes the behavior of a number of things like this. It's a 'recommended update' from windows update, so maybe you recently installed it. It can be uninstalled from the control panel.

I checked and it says windows search 4 was installed in july, so I don't think that is the problem because it just started doing this. I uninstalled it anyway just in case. Thanks for the suggestion +rep. BTW, if you are a fellow Zappa junky you should check out Dweezil's tour with Zappa Plays Zappa - I've never seen a more impressive and tighter show, and I've seen many many a concert in my time. Keep it greasy!

Start Orb > Control Panel, select "Task bar and Start menu properties".
Choose the "Start" tab, uncheck "Store and display a list of recently opened files" and "Store and display a list of recently opened programs".
Can't remember if you then need to clear the browser history or not under Internet Options > General Tab....think you do. Close your browser and use Internet Options in Control panel, then open the browser
You should be good to go....
