if i'm not mistaken, this used to be an 5-meg application you could download in a minute. i bought a new laptop for the first time in years (dell vostro 1500), and looking under Add/Remove programs, i see it's ballooned to 87 megs. is there any reason to have this version? i want to jettison this, but will i find a much more slimmed down version on the web?

You can also try using an older version of Adobe Reader... I was using 5.0 without any real problems before I moved to Foxit Reader.

The problem with Acrobat Reader 8 is that it has a bunch of bloatware that comes with it. I think there's something that allows you to send back stuff to Adobe to convert it to PDF(which is a trial, pay if you want the full service), and a bunch of other web related unnecessary junk.
Me, I'm just sticking with Acrobat 7.09. Seems to work fine.
I tried using Foxit but there seems to be some PDF that I just can't seem to open. Wonder why? Any help? -
Have a look at this thread

Edit: As far as Adobe, I've been getting more and more annoyed with them, and finally I went to foxit reader. It's wonderful, fast, and works great! -
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636 the plug in for firefox to use foxit or anything other than adobe...
also you can try this one a GREAT program it allows you to edit and write onto any pdf and makes notes etc on them... http://www.docu-track.com/home/prod_user/pdfx_viewer/
the one from docu track allows a lot of things to be done:
* Add Comments and Annotations to any PDF file (subject to security settings) - unlilke the Adobe Viewer which requires the PDF creation tool to be 'certified' by Adobe !
* Markup pages with text and objects
* Type directly on any PDF page, not just Adobe enabled forms documents - in Typewriter mode.
* Export PDF pages or entire files to any one of the supported Image formats including BMP, JPEG, TIFF, PNG and many more ...
* Extract text from a PDF page/File
* Make your navigation of large or complex PDF files both simple and enjoyable swith the extended functionality of our 'Loupe' and the 'Pan' Window tools
* Fill and Save Adobe Forms to disk, email or 'post' !
* Full Javascript Engine included
* Updated JPEG2000 Compression support - improving speed.
And many more features such as Rotate and 'Save', Email files etc ... -
As many have stated, foxitreader is much better than adobe. I wish I found this product sooner because in college I would have to go through hundreds of science journal articles.

-
The worst part is when you open a document it pauses and you have to wait like a minute for it to "prepare" the document. ridiculous.
