opera 9.5:
. impressive speed
. automatic search for within last entries and bookmarks for matching url
. smooth page scrolling
. streaming video: some (almost all) sites show NOTHING
. yahoo mail: function correctly.
minefield (aka FF3):
. speed can be tweaked to match OP9.5
. automatic search is only within current browsing entries (lost the bookmarks check between nightly builds)
. 13sep07 build:
- yahoo mail: cannot delete/clean folders when a message is opened
- yahoo mail: does not delete/clean folders automatically if the confirmation is being first asked. the dialog screen must first be closed
- video streaming: on some sites, echoing & repeating, and still running in background even the page is being closed
i still have high hope for ff
cheers ...

Can't wait for Opera 9.5 to come out, any word on when the final of either of this will be released?
-
Op9.5a does not have a problem with streaming video on my machine.
FF does run video in background after I close the page but I haven't had echoing and repeating.
I don't use yahoo mail so I have nothing to add about that. -
. O9.5a: streaming is ok now on my machine
. Minefield from last night build:
- bombed with multiple tabs
- yahoo mail still ongoing issues (other mails no problems)
- keep forcing to be default browser after each update for the last 4 days, even though NO was being checked
- video streaming issue is fixed
cheers ... -
. O9.5a:
- love the visual tooltip on the tab
- each tab=new small window, must get used to this
cheers ... -
minefield (last night built)
- awesome CNN video streaming, pic/audio quality excellent, no cracking or noticeable delay with multiple tabs
- faster page rendering
- hovering about 90k in task manager with 6 opened tabs
- yahoo video streaming (news): echoing like 3 days ago, bombed the whole app
- very quick recovery, no hung process, restore all connections correctly
O9.5a
- no new update
cheers ... -
minefield:
- so far very impressed with ram usage: 60-85k with multiple tabs
- no more hung after shutting down and spike in process
now if they only fixed the yahoo dingy and start to get the extensions and themes in
cheers ... -
minefield aka ff3:
an interesting update from last night built, among other goodies still in testing:
- Built in malware protection - a preview ( http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/its-an-attack.html )
- support for web.based protocol handlers (web builders would love this)
cheers ... -
-
i see, u will not be able to see it under anything but minefield, let me try to upload a pic
cheers ... -
here is the pic
cheers ... -
By the way, any idea when 3.0 will be available?
-
i m not so sure, it was slated for november this year a while back, but then, i rather see it postponing a bit more and coming out better. been testing this along with O9.5a - which is quite impressive - but i must say i m still with FF
some more interesting stuffs to be part of gran paradiso

cheers ... -
minefield surprise built (less than 12 hrs from previous):
- burning FAST!
- 10 secs to drop off process tasks after shut down. Big improvement from previous 60secs
- site presentation much better focus (clean font, clarity)
- 4 tabs: hovering at 58+mb and 6-8%
- plugins (yes, besides extension and themes): DivX Player Netscape. DivX Content Upload, DivX WebPlayer, Java Platform SE6 U2, MIcrosoft DRM for Netscape Network and Store Netscape, Mozilla Defaul plug-in, Real JukeBOx NS, RealPlayer Version, RealPlayer G2 LiveConnect, Shockware Flash, Turner Media , Virtual Earth 3D, WIndows Media Player Dynamic Library, Yahoo Application State.
cheers ... -
yahoo video news streaming broke again: echoing, causing app dump! :-(
cheers ... -
just now test O9.5a vs Minefield 3.08pre:
- yahoo.com load test: start on O first and M second, M shows "Done" while O still "transferring"
- speedguide.net: again M beats O by a 1+ sec
- ny warm load (went back to previous site, already in cache): M beats out O clearly as well
may be ff is finally catching up with Opera in loading page speed
need more input gals/guys - i m a one.man test so it cannot be 100% correct
cheers ... -
-
must admit that 9.5a has loads of potential
still, the last 3 updated builds from minefield got me hooked good. the quality of images, fonts and page.rendering speed are overwhelming. sure, it still give me pain with the yahoo site.
cheers ... -
Firefox 3.0 (aka minefield, aka gran paradiso)
a peek at the new bookmarks management?
- http://scr3.golem.de/?d=0709/Firefox_3_Places&a=54712&s=2
cheers ... -
The bookmarking system looks a little too complicated. Then again it is just a screen shot.
-
well, it will not be changing much, just a bit more candy.eyed look
cheers ... -
-
today's minefield built update:
a total BOMB! crash and burn intermittently by just trying to access a link
well, they do not call it "minefield" for nothing!
cheers ... -
-
15 hours+ to go before the next built update!
cheers ... -
minefield today's built:
. yahoo new video fixed regarding echoing and bombed out
. but then, there were no video and no sound
guess that was the best way to fix the problem
still very fast
cheers ... -
minefield today's built:
- yahoo news video streaming fixed
- yahoo mail = total disaster (reply lost original sender, attachment hangs & coming back with virus scanner error)
- still very, very fast
why just yahoo site and utilities? i could not duplicate these at any other mail client sites that i use (gmx, netscape, msn ...)
cheers ... -
update on #27:
- hovering at 80mb but with 97% cpu!!!!!!
- total bomb when stay on minefiled more than 1 1/2 hour
- must kill process and restart :-((
cheers ... -
Thanks for the updates. Keep them coming.
-
Yeah this is some pretty good info. Lets us outsiders know what's going on with he new FF builds.
-
O9.5a/Build9500:
- nice looking and smooth page rendering
- quick
- widgets library is getting larger
- widgets management is much simpler than in previous ver9
- personally i think this is quite clever if one just like to have some rss feeds inside small boxes OUTSIDE the browser itself
- wishing that there is a way to pick and start certain (or all) widgets at next browser start. At this moment, it is manually activated
after digging around the background process and to see what makes Opera rendering page faster (as in one previous post), i have tweaked my ff2 with the followings (in about:config):
- network.http.pipelining = true
- network.http.pipelining.maxrequests = 16
(leave alone the other network* values)
i m IMPRESSED! my FF2 is now a mustang.
cheers ... -
cheers ... -
minefield 01oct built:
. yahoo mail: can delete folder without extra click to first close the dialog; but still only at folder level (on going bug)
. yahoo video news streaming: keeps stepping down to lowest speed (new bug)
. cnn news video streaming correctly
. shutting down needed 17-20secs to release resources (on going "bug"?); current FF2 releases resources instantly
. it is faster and faster
cheers ... -
Firefox is faster that Opera beta right?
-
at the moment, my personal take is yes. But one must do some tweaks to the network values as in post#31, which I do not feel that it is correct (nice). Opera however is quite smooth in scrolling within pages and media plugins. Minefield is coming up fast in this area as well - more plugins, in addition to the extensions (and themes).
i m totally hooked at the moment with minefield (with all its quirkiness by yahoo)
cheers ... -
Well there is always Fastefox, and Downthemall to speed things up without using config hacks. Even though they don't support 3.0 i think there's this addon that i forgot the name of that allows you to bypass version check and use it anyway.
-
but they r hack in themselves, changing the same values as one would do them manually in about:config; which is very nice for ff users. I am just getting used to play with about:config since day one
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries
best way to know more about ff engine
cheers ... -
So the hacks are built in? If it's just fast because of better coding and stuff then why don't use those stuff to make it even faster?
-
but it will never be "constantly" fast as long as there are "only IE conformed" sites still floating about
cheers ... -
FF's standards are better than IE's so those sites should still work unless the owner blocks you via scripts. Though for obsolete tags there might be some site breaks and inconsistencies there are only a few of those who oppose FF. Other don't know about it, or think opera is faster. Once we educate everyone about web browsers we can truly have browser wars because IE won't be the only thing accessible for computer illiterate people. =\ There just aren't enough geeks in the world.
-
well firefox "3" still stuck in a perpetual problematic mode with yahoo mail, other than that nothing much to add to the current beta development
opera: now this is a BIG step backward, and I am a bit surprised and disappointed. Disappointed because i was hoping for a good shoot out between FF and O.
Anyway, Opera (9.5) came out back to back with the beta version and the latest build 9624 - which was a total disaster. Page rendering was the worst I ever experienced, may be it had to do a lot with a bunch of bug fixes between the Beta and the build. The alpha was much much better and in line with previous versions. I expect to see the next build within hours, this is so sad for opera users.
cheers ... -
I played around a bit with FF3.0, and was impressed. It passes the ACID2 test, which is nice, and it fixes a bug in FF2 that's been driving me mad at work (the caret becomes invisible on a textbox if there's a layer below it or something silly like that. The effect is that you can't see which textfield has focus, or where you're typing)
-
totally agreed that FF users r looking at something would satisfy their usage dedication. And my grrrrrrr on the yahoo mail thing will pass, since the 1st alpha 3 version did not have the issue
cheers ... -
It sounds like Firefox is really stepping up so they can beat everyone else. Though that's what they have already been doing.
-
-
update:
- O 9.5 beta build 9656: cnn streaming DEAD (undefined message came up). Last build of 9624 was ok. Rendering not as smooth as the first beta version. Faster than last build but a long pause in between pages
- FF3: my perpetual yahoo complaint still around. More and more extensions start showing up for the 3preB built versions. Also the "possible attack site" warning message - as posted above - is now being implemented, with the user can decide to back out or ignore and go on.
- Safari 3.0.4 beta: getting better, could eventually be something in the windows platform. Personally, still way to go to catch up O and FF under windows platform
cheers ... -
I can hardly wait for Firefox 3.0.
