well i got my new thinkpad R61 and ive gotten rid of everything i could at startup but it still seems like i have alot of processes running. i added a two gig stick right after i got the computer and that did seem to help quite a bit.
the main thing im posting the thread for is because for some reason after the computer has been up and running for a while the Apoint.exe in the taskmanager keeps eating memory. ive seen it get up to 100k but when it first starts its only like 2k and it just keeps expanding from there. ive tried to end the process and the trackpad still works but i cant scroll on the edge.
i am just wondering if this is a normal thing or whats going on. ive searched google for other issues with this process but i havnt found anything. i just dont know why it uses so much memory after the computer has been running for a while. if i take it anywhere i use hibernation so i dont have constantly shut down and restart windows.
i really appreciate anyones comments or if they have the same process using so much memory.
sorry to post this again in a different section but i havnt had much luck on this issue at the lenovo forums. i would really like to know if anyone else has had this problem with this process. i like the feature of scrolling on the edge of the touchpad so id rather not have to turn it off.

i would try first and see if there is another newer alp driver version out there. r u running vista or xp?
cheers ... -
ive tried to download the newest drivers i could find and its still the same. the long the computer is on the more memory apoint.exe uses.
im using vista home premium and ive gotten rid of all thinkvantage stuff except access connections and power manager and of course the active protection for the hard drive. ive left it on for a while and for the most part is really stable.
it just really bugs me that its using so much memory and theres also so many other processes running. but i am using an f-secure firewall/virus protector and that has quite a few of processes.
the only other thing is the UAC or whatever it is for admin access. i cant turn it off because then i have that stupid red X in the tray. i guess ill just have to deal with that hopfully somthing will change about that thing. -
what version of the alp device u have at the moment? mine is 6.0.305.6 (but then it is xp)
cheers ... -
tried this one for vista?

7.0.1601.23
8/8/2007
thats the version i have and the date released. ive tried to download the one you posted but the one thats installed is newer. windows says its up to date i dont see whats causing this. -
i would at least force it to accept the one from softpedia - sometimes the newer driver would cause issue. U can always revert to previous or make a restore point before updating. Based on the version, i do not see why the current one is newer than the one from softpedia
cheers ... -
ive tried to update to that driver and it just makes it so i cant scroll om the edge of the touchpad. ive found out what actually causes it to use more memory. the only time it uses more memory is when i try to scroll on pages where it doesnt work. like when i try to scroll but the page cant be scrolled anymore. has anyone else had this problem just go to the task manager and see if it keeps using memory.
the only way i can see how to keep the memory from going up is be really careful of when i use the scroll feature. its so wierd why just scrolling on the edge of the touchpad would use so much memory no matter what. -
if i use the scroll feature on the edge of the touch pad on this thinkpad on the desktop it will keep using memory. i can keep trying to scroll on the desktop and it will use more and more memory ive gotten it up to over 300k. i know theres no need to scroll on the desktop but there still shouldnt be a reason to use so much memory if i am. each time i try to scroll on the right or bottom edge it uses anywhere from 500k to 2000k of memory. it really seems like a memory leake to me.
ive tried all kinds of different alps drivers which take away the scrolling feature on the edge of the pad. ive downloaded the ultranav drive from lenovo and its the newest ive found.
doesnt anyone else use the scrolling feature or have the apoint.exe process running??? it just doesnt make any sense why it uses so much memory and doesnt release it. -
does anyone else have this problem?? the only way i can get the scroll feature to work on the edge of the touch pad is to use the ultranav driver. i just dont understand why it uses memory if i scroll outside a window (ie: desktop) when its trying to scroll on an area where it cannon be scrolled it keep eating memory.
does anyone else even use the touchpad scolling feature??? i really like scrolling on the edge of the mouse but i have to be so careful or else it just keeps using more and more memory if i scroll in the wrong spots. -
does anyone else have this problem??
does anyone know what i could do to help with this problem??
maybe if other people try what i have they will see it on their computers.
it really sucks to see like half my ram being used on something stupid like this i would really like some advice on this. -
ive tried everything i can think of to fix this but either i have scrolling with the memory leak or no scrolling. i like having the touchpad scrolling to much to just use a different driver. i would really rather not have to call tech support because they will just run me through everything ive already done. everything else works fine i have not had one problem with the r61 besides that weird pointing device driver memory leak.
i wish someone could give me some more info about memory leaks or something. i cant think of anything that would cause this i thought maybe it was the ram i added but it did it with just the stock 1gig. i thought maybe i didnt plug the touchpad in all the way when putting it back together after putting the ram in but its still the same.
i would really appreciate if someone could post some comments about this its really got me stumped. could it be a defective touchpad? i really dont wanna send it in for repair. -
Well, I am not sure this is a problem. I have vista business, and my notebook (sz650) uses more or less the same memory: Apoint.exe is at 624K and ApntEx.exe uses 320K. I think this could be normal... although Im not sure why I have 2 alps devices installed.
-
yea i have both the same processes running but the ApntEx.exe stays right around what it is at startup about 1,200kb but the other process apoint.exe starts up at like 2,000kb but if i scroll accidentally somewhere other then just a web page or something of that sort it just starts eating more and more memory. if i am really careful where i scroll its no big deal but if i scroll a bunch somewhere it doesn't work it really starts using a good portion of memory.
all the times i scroll in the wrong places it keeps adding to the memory its using. it just doesn't seem right to me i could see going up to a certain point then stopping but it will continue to use more and more memory.
alps pointing-device driver memory usage???
