when I close the lid on my Acer aspire 6920g there is a windows sound,

The asterisk sound that windows makes annoyingly a lot of the time. Its happens every 10-15 seconds whilst the lid is shut and its on power.

When I have it on power I have it set "do nothing" when lid is closed as I stream movies to my xbox with lid closed.

    GGRRR,

When I open the lid there is no notifications in task-bar to give me any clue as to what the sound event occurred for!

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer.

    Thanks in advance.

Go to start menu, type in sound, click on that program, then go to the sound tab.

You can disable the notification sounds there. I'm not sure which one it is.

If the "asterisk" sound is being made, then there is an error of some sort. You need to find what it is rather than hide it. Try looking in the event log to see if it has anything recorded.

Thanks guys, obviously hiding it is not a good idea. That's why I came to the forum for help.

I have scanned through the event log and only found errors related to certificates. Typically after installing system log also to help monitor what is happening, it has stopped doing it!!

I will keep checking, if I find out what it is I'll let you know.

    Odd.

    Figured it out!

    hahahah

The screen when warm is making the fingerprint recognition to activate, The beep is the failed reading of the fingerprint. Hence no errors!

    hahahahahahah

I don't think the spamming of "haha" was necessary but nonetheless, glad you found the error.

And looks like you might need to find a better alternative to cooling your laptop.

    it isnt overheating.

It's when I close the lid after using it for a hour or so as the screen is warm. If I close the lid after just a few minutes use it doesn't do it.

(took some spam out, I found the cause comical)

You might want to to avoid the screen heating up too much, it can make the lcd panel go bad or die prematurely if it gets too hot. I have no idea what would be considered a safe and unsafe temperature for the lcd though. It's just something you might want to look into.

it doesn't get that hot, the screen turns off once lid is closed.

Alright then, it should be safe. I should precise that i was referring to heat coming from the internals like the CPU and GPU through the keyboard as potentially damaging rather than the heat generated by the LCD. This used to be a problem on some G5x Asus laptops when people were gaming with the lid closed if i recall correctly.

    Thanks for that.

When I stream for around 4 or 5 hour I can open laptop lid and its not warm. My last one used to get hot where the HDD was and slightly where CPU was. Thi laptop however cruises along very cool.

The exhaust is well situated for having the lid closed.
