My partner's laptop has been having a couple of problems in vista that may have been avg related. Does anyone know any free antivirus software (anything!) that works properly on vista i.e. designed/updated for vista?

    Thanks

I've been using avast! free, you might try that one. I've not heard anything overtly bad about AVG free, either, though.

    Curious....

It has been opening random blank explorer windows (no adderss bar or anything just big white screen) and the only way to get around it is open the task manager and then you can close it.

My partner thinks it's AVG related as after uninstalling AVG it doesn't seem to have happened. I'm not so sure, but I'd like to put another antivirus on it so we can get the laptop back online and see if it still does it.

Seems like a reasonable approach, to try alternatives.

    A couple of other thoughts:
    • There is not a conflict with Windows Defender and/or Windows Firewall is there? I disabled them both, having replaced them with alternative solutions.
    • The PC itself is all up-to-date with maintenance as per Windows Update, correct?
    • There are no custom or suspect toolbars installed into this instance of IE, are there?

Were they small windows that cannot be maximized? If yes, it was likely the update window hanging. Vista has a tendency to interfere with AVG's updater service.
