are there any softwares out there are can help me re-calibrate my battery 'cause suddenly last night my battery sign shows a red X thru it and says that consider replacing your battery and i've only had this laptop for around two yrs. I was hoping if I re-calibrate(if thats the right term..) the battery it would be okay afterwards. I really really cant afford a new battery right now. Laptop and specs in sig.

You don't need any software to calibrate your battery. Run the computer continuously on battery power until the system shuts down (ie, the battery hits 0%). Then charge the battery until it hits 100% charge. How long have you had this battery?

My wife's computer has the same problem. The battery is old and does not hold nearly as much charge as it used to. That's why you're getting that warning.

You do not need to do anything about it.

Two years is actually what you can usually expect to get out of a battery. If your laptop is telling you that your battery is dead, it's more than likely that it really is dead.

There are cheaper alternatives to buying a "new" battery. I purchased a "scratch & dent" battery for my ThinkPad which was $17, compared to $120. It was a brand new battery and I am into its 2nd year.

time for a new one buddy.

A battery is made for a 1000 recharge life. after that it goes to the garbage can

well if its 100% charged it runs usual run time as it did before but now it just has an X and says please replace your battery and your computer might shut down suddenly, otherwise my battery is running fine as it was before. but I will try to drain it to 0%..... problem is i have it set to hibernate when it gets to 7% and i have to find out how to change that again :D thank you for the replies

    EDIT : andddddddd I found it :D.

how many times do i have to drain and recharge the battery? i think i read somewhere that its either once or twice, just making sure

Calibration only requires you to drain and recharge the battery once.

While early beta versions of Windows 7 could misread battery capacity despite recalibration, this problem has been fixed in current retail and OEM versions. Given I have a battery in the same reported condition that actually does hold only 10 minutes' worth of charge before dying outright, I'd believe what Windows is telling you, unfortunately! I know how expensive replacement batteries are, trust me. :(

Pragmatically, your batts will drain to around 2-5%, not 0%
Low charge levels destroy the Lithium ion batteries, we put in measures to shut down the system before it reaches said levels.

On that note, it is very difficult to measure the charge level for a battery accurately. We normally use discharge characteristics and open circuit voltage, that's why its calibrates your batts when you discharge "fully".
