Notebooks don't have Video in ports (a simple cable cant help); therefore you will have to buy an external video capture device or a TV tuner with video capturing capability. Most capture (TV tuner) devices come bundled with decent recording software.

its easy... all you need is a old vhs camcorder. And all u'll need is a video out cable from the camcorder to the IEEE 1394 in ur laptop or pc.

If you cant get a old vhs camcorder then get any camcorder and dupe ur vhs movies to the blank media of the camcorder and then transfer via firewire/IEEE1394 to ur HD

Yes, using a camcorder is one option.

A video capture device is a unit that allows you to connect and view/record a video signal from an external video device such as a VCR/DVD Player, TV, Camcorder or a Game Console like XBOX/ PlayStation.

A TV tuner is a device that will allow you to watch notmal TV on your PC by connecting the antenna wire or the cable box. It basically converts your PC to a TV. Most TV tuners also support video capturing, therefore it is an extension to the basic video capturing device (like mentioned above) with an added TV tuner component.

External Video capture devices and TV tuners come in many different interfaces such as USB, Firewire, PCMCIA, Expresscard or even Ethernet.

I'd definitely agree with this, depending on whether you want to do any editing, or just straight copies, for straight copies I'd get the dedicated machine, because otherwise you have to record off tape, compress to a size that a DVD would be able to handle, and then burn back onto DVD, lots of steps (now if it's one or two tapes, that might be fine, but lots of tapes, I'd get a machine for certain).
