hey, i installed avast on my computer, but then my wireless connection stopped working, and the LAN doesn't work either. apparently, there was some sort of conflict between avast and norton, but when i uninstall avast, my wireless is fine. any advice?

You cant have two antivirus installed. If you want a second antivirus try using Panda Activescan. It doesnt install, it just scans and removes via their website.

Since Avast and Norton are incompatible, you should probably uninstall Norton and use Avast (its generally considered better). Also, its not that you can't have to antivirus programs installed, but rather that either can't have these particular programs running simultaneously.

Actually it is a little more complicated than having two virus scanners. True that they usually collide and cause problems shutting things down. But avast has been known to turn off the wireless and networking when it encounters problems (such as norton trying to take over scanning files and system tasks). Use one or the other and you'll be good, just not both. If you want more security with different engines. Use the online scanners like bitdefender, trend micro, and so on.

Have you tried turning off the active protection to Norton or Avast and see if that clears up the problem? In general, it's good to have two anti-virus, but you shouldn't have both with their active protection turned on. If you're looking for a good free alternative, use Avast with active protection on and Avira with active protection off. Currently, that's what I use (Avira's the primary scanner).

How do I stop the Avast window, telling me that "Virus database has been updated", from opening when my computor is on? It's pretty annoying to be told that over and over every day.

Try having update run in Silent Mode. I personally have it used it, but I think that should do it. To access it: right click avast icon -> Program Settings -> Update Basic -> Details -> under Running Mode choose Silent

I'm also going to be trying this out because that does bug me as well. I was just too lazy to go through the settings.

Thanks! Program settings wasn't available in the Avast icon. Had to right click on the open program window. This lay deeply hidden! But now I have removed it! Things like virus programs should work in the silent background, without you having to be reminded about it.
