i am thinking of replacing my bd-rom with a 2nd hdd and stirong my blurays and other movies in this data drive.
the problem is i dont know what software to use to rip the bd's. please suggest some programs i may try, preferably (but not limited to) something free.
im looking to rip them to 1080p or maybe 720p(if disk space becomes a problem). my first priority would be quality before file size too.

    edit:
im not sure if this is against forums rules, so just delete just in case it violates any.

I have briefly used MakeMKV, publisher offers free 60-day trials while product is in beta. I used this to convert Blu-ray version of 'V for Vendetta' to 17GB .mkv file.

I also use DVDFab though I have never used the BR rip only the DVD rip. Of all the DVD rip programs though I found it to be the best and its free for the rip program (not sure for the BR rip I think that is a pay for program)

I could easily compress a BR to a 4GB 720P file or about 6-8GB for 1080p with no visual loss in quality with MeGUI using some good X264 settings and AAC for the audio.

Sorry bout that, looked like nobody was interested so I had no intentions of spending hours of my life to draft up something nobody would read.

The audio section only got a few reply's and then sunk into the abyss of the forums.

It's been a while since I did it, but AFAIR, it took maybe 4-5 hours using MakeMKV 1.54 to transcode 'V for Vendetta' using:

    Desktop 'puter:

    i7 940 @2.93GHz
    ASUS P6 mobo
    12GB RAM
several WD RE-3 1TB drives in JBOD

maybe its because not very many people do audio compression.
im sure you would have gotten more responses and feedback if you did one on video encoding. still hoping you get around to doing it.
