I know everyone is using an uber amount of RAM compared to me (192MB) but can anyone recommend a good memory optimiser to use?

Ive seen FreeRAM XP Pro but its had mixed reviews. Has anyone tried it? Is there anything better?

    Thanks.

I never thought those RAM utilities really work. Why not just buy more RAM?

Any 'optimizer' you use is just gonna eat up some of those precious resources you're trying to save, so what would be the point? Windows should be able to do an OK job.

192 wow - disable evey service (assuming Windows) , utility , startup you can - as suggested here Ram ulitities are not worth it , a throw back to when 640k , Himem and Extented memory and EM386 were an issue - even then I am not sure they worked.

Maybe you can extend your paging file. I'm not sure of the effect on resources though. Can someone verify?

Already one step ahead of you mate! I prize myself on the cut-down version of windows i use. Only 17 background services using 744 process modules according to Ad-Aware.

I have the following starting up automatically, any chaff i can get rid of? (see attched file)

I'd be happy to reduce it even further or have i taken away something important?

Sorry but ram optimizers just flat out do not work and never have for me.

I'm sure they do a little bit of what they claim they are supposed to do, but it doesn't make enough of a difference to be felt I'm afraid.

If these ram optimizers were so great then they would be hailed by all reviewers.

You're just stuck with what you have until you get your new notebook, but if you CAN, shell out 40 bucks and get some more ram.

Free RAM XP sure as hell works for me.

Lets say I have 502mb free but im gonna play bf2, I hit try to free 100% of RAM and it gets it up to around 592mb free or higher, every little bit helps, plus Free Ram XP hardly takes up any RAM for itself.

You can dissable the following services from the list you posted:
    - AVG7 Update Service (if you manually update your virus definitions)
    - Background Intelligent Transfer - unless you run a server or in a business network environment.
    - Logical Disk Mananger (doubt you use it)
    - Secondary Login (security risk, anyway)
    - TrueVector Internet Monitor (unless you use that)

truevector is part of Zone Alarms firewall, so if you disable/stop service ZA won't work.

Ok thanks. I wasnt going to disable that or avg - i like how it updates everyday! But apart from that i was going to disable the other un-needed services.

By disabling all the extra services, i havent comprimised the security of my system have i?

Also, does that mean i am running as close to a barebones version of windows?

i use cacheman xp. helps me free up ram. also acts as a more user friendly task manager. u can see the peak ram usage etc. and it takes up a mere 800kb of ram. comes with lots of tweaks too.
