Well I do use something like a paid program Active Undelete and it does a very good job of file recovery but this is only if there hasn't been data written to the hard since those files were lost. Otherwise recovery is going to be a hard thing to do. Usually a dying hdd using a USB adapter you can still recover the data it's when you use it as the main drive that it will not function properly. So take it out use USB adapter and get the data ASAP before it completely dies. -

Tried many and found Active@ Undelete to be great!

I would suggest putting the drive in a USB adaptor and then use explorer to retrieve the files, if you need to run a recovery I have used recuvva from prirsoft, Active Undelete, EaseUS and Glary's tools
for me it seemed I had best luck with undeletes and not overwritten files with recuvva and Active. for digging deeper for recovering most of a file it was EaseUS.Ferris23 likes this. -
Since he's talking about a failing hard drive rather than recovering accidentally deleted files this is probably his best bet. There's no special software that's generally available I know of for this. A trick that's sometimes helpful is to put the drive in the refrigerator for 10 minutes, and then get the files off as quickly as possible. Obviously, use that drive as little as possible before getting the data off.

yes, the drive is not readable at present. my idea was to clone the drive, since certain cloning programs can automatically reallocate bad sector bit to good ones. then try file recovery on the cloned disk. its a longshot but what do i have to lose at this point.

You could try something like this.

Not good if the fridge option doesn't work your chances goes downhill to have any good chance to save the data at this point in time. Sometimes just letting it sit out for some time will premit you gain brief access to the drive and if you get that chance take all the data/file she created on it off ASAP before it locks or stops again. That how I did it for my Desktop HDD that started loosing directories and would vanish on my desktop restart worked but eventually I had to move all my data off and not long after that it finally stop letting me have access to it but my data/files were off by that time. -
The fridge is your only hope then; other than spending a boatload of money for a professional data recovery service, with no guarantee that they can get your data back. There is no software that can deal with hardware gone bad.tijo likes this.

All the data recovery program in this website are very good Any Data Recovery- Recover All Lost Data form Windows/Mac/iPhone/Android/Memory Card

wouldn't say there is one best recovery software, it depends on the situation. in yours you might be able to get everything or some stuff off of it by hooking it up to an enclosure or directly to the motherboard on your computer and transferring the data to another drive.

If your hdd can be detected in the bios, i use EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard for situation like yours.
Plug in that problem hdd as a secondary disk and run the recovery wizard from your primary OS disk.
best data recovery program
