just wondering what people use to play dvds. I recently read reviews where Nvidias Purevideo was reviewd and it looked really good but im using PowerDVD which came with my computer. Is that good or is there something better?

i like powerdvd myself. does everything ive ever asked it to do
-
I use ZoomPlayer, but that's because I've used it for ages, and find it a nice simple application to use for everything.
It's using PowerDvD as the drivers behind it (if that makes any difference?) -
I use power dvd its great!!
-
i'm using power DVD. so nice and good.

VLC has played everything I've asked it to.

The player/pause button on the new Dell Inspirons doesn't seem to work with the new version of PowerDVD 7.0 that just came out. All the other buttons do and so did ver 6.0 I ended up returning it and got windvd 7.0 It has sooooo many more functions.

PowerDVD costs $69.95. Being most laptops with a CD/DVD burner comes with software already installed to view DVD's, why would you spend $70 for PowerDVD (or any other DVD software?)
Are the other programs mentioned in this thread free, or are people spending $$$ for these programs, and if you're spending $$$, what features are there that don't come with (say) Media Player Classic, or WMP, which are free?
Just wondering.... -
I actually only paid 19 bucks, I had PowerDVD 6.0 Deluxe on my old laptop so the upgrade cost was only 19 dollars. And when I switched to WinDVD they have an competitor upgrade price.
-
So which do you prefer, PowerDVD or WinDVD?
Are they worth upgrading, or should I just stick with WMP and Media Player Classic? (I also use DivX Player)
Thanks -
If you go here. They got a pretty good review of PowerDVD 7 and Windvd 7

I'm more into WinDVD at the time.
1. You can turn the movie into your desktop (really cool feature)
2. Has a lot more options then Power (audio and video)
3. The mobile technology pack is standard on WinDVD 7 but you need PowerDVD 7. Deluxe for their version.
Anyways as far as using WMP to play DVDs, I'm pretty sure you can't unless you have a DVD program installed anyways. Windows XP by default doesn't have a codec for playing DVDs. Media Center Edition might, but if it does all your getting is a standard player with no nice sound/video options to play with. -
power dvd all the way. yet to find anything better
-
I use PowerDVD; I find the older versions to be better and lighter.
-
For solely DVD playing, I'll have to go with PowerDVD. For any other video playback, I recommend VLC.
I have both installed on my PC. -
I use the latest powerdvd delux with the notebook pack. It is better than the power dvd that came with E1705.
-
i personally love windvd's 'time stretch' feature.
-
i use Roxio DVDMax Player. It came with my burner and i like it alot.
-
at the moment iam trying vlc ,have used power dvd alot but i think the program is to heavy .

PureVideo all the way. Works wonderfully on my 7600 Go. Low CPU usage and fantastic image quality.
-
PowerDVD -- for sure works great, does all I need it to do.
-
Powerdvd only b/c it works with the media buttons on my dell. otherwise i'd be using vlc
-
VLC all the way.
How many other media players can you contol from a telnet console? None. -
PowerDVD. It came with my Sager and it works fine for what I do with it.
-
I use Media Player Classic for all my video needs, DVDs too. I dunno, been using it for years and its been flawless for me. And, it's free
.

Power DVD 5, I seem to acquire new copies all the time!
For non-DVD video playback I use vlc. -
I've always used and prefer PowerDVD.
Question - on my old version of PowerDVD (used with Windows 98se), I had a snap shot option in the player.
In the version that I have now (pre-installed) on my new Dell E1705, I don't see that option. Is it there and I just haven't found it (yet) or do I have to upgrade the version I have now?
The older version of Cyberlink PowerDVD software (Win 98) came with the DVD player I installed in the older computer. Not compatible with Windows XP.
Thanks for the help - this is a great forum board. -
PowerDVD here.. Like others have said.. It does what I want it to do... lol.. have Windows Media player 11 installed.. guess I should compare the 2 and see how they measure up.
-
For simply playing DVDs, what is wrong with the simplicity of WMP?
It plays DVDs, and you can watch Full Screen and use the Media controls ?
What more is there?
Just curious -
o i thought i was going to be the first to use media player classic but "skoreanime" beat me to it .
the reason is almost the same as him . i dont need special features on my dvd player , just want to watch the movie ot concert .
the main reason i have it is : free , plays everything i trow to it, has a small footprint so it starts very fast. -
InterVideo WinDVD.
-
VLC > for Linux
Intervideo WinDVD > for Windows -
I would have always said VLC for XP
But then my new copy of 'Little Miss Sunshine' (brilliant film by the way) created an error - some visual basic error or something. But for some reason MPC was fine. Unfortunately I have always found MPC to be less than brilliant with DVD navigation - for some reason selecting something takes several go's to register
