Best Antivirus are either NOD32 or my choice, Kaspersky Labs. It updates its virus definitions list every hour, 24/7 (small files each one) for totally up-to-the-minute protection against new variants in the wild. Neither are resource hogs or bury deeply into the OS. Kaspersky has consistently the very highest test results, 98.9% detection rate.

I personally use Avast. It is free. Works pretty good. Get a good firewall too. I'd look into ZoneAlarm. It is free as well. Lastly, use a browser that is not internet explorer. I use mozilla, but there are other. Good Luck.
