and also do codecs boost performance on files it already plays like avi.mp3,mp4 etc
i have files like flv i want to play and all kinds

I use K-Lite Codec Pack. The Mega version gives you pretty much every codec necessary to play almost, if not every video under the sun. You can get it from codecguide.com.

Shark007's FREE Codec solutions.
Things the Shark pack does that other packs cannot do . . .
1. Full color thumbnails including FLV's and 10bit MKV's
(also allows users to select at what point by percentage to grab the thumbnail)
2. Enable the Preview Pane for ALL newly enabled filetypes such as MKV and FLV.
3. Explorer properties are displayed for non native filetypes such as MKV and FLV
4. Updated often - and has update notification builtin
5. Allow use of the PDVD12 decoders for 32bit LiveTV
6. Supports the use of Xbox360 as Extenders to playback MKV files
7. Allows singleclick setup of Bitstreamed Audio
8. Support playback of MOD audio files and M4A files containing ALAC
9. Supports playlist creation for use in Media Center
10. Allow users to Enable/Disable codecs installed on their system
11. Funtionality such as Win7DSFilterTweaker builtin.
12. Support 'Add to Windows Media Player List' using rightclick on all files such as MKV. -

Yup, I'm using Shark007 free codec solution as well (x64 flavor of course).
Works pretty good, and since I'm working in 3dsMax, its useful to have codecs in the OS for encoding raw/uncompressed animations. -
Anyone still use CCCP? However, the benefits you listed on Shark007, make me want to reconsider the next time I update my computer files...
-
I use the Shark007 codec pack with WMP, and it's worked fantastically. Sometimes, WMP does hiccup with certain subtitles, so I do keep an install of VLC as backup.

I use CCCP with WMP just fine... I do have MPC as a backup. I prefer WMP since it allows for a bunch of videos to be queued.
-
bear in mind codec pack do not write/maintain the codes, they just grab splitter and decoders from different source and put them together. Most of the time, they may be using the same thing.
MPC does have queue and playlist, just that it like to hide it. -
Tried many popular packs. Stayed with Shark007. For years now. It is the best for me. Has many tweaks, and has recommended default (Shark) settings. Plays everything in WMP. Simply works with no additional players, or any additonal tweaks, but it allows you to set many obscure codec settings if you want. Clean install and uninstall (but you must run Settings app with elevated privileges).

Like almost everybody who posted on this thread, I'll give another vote to Shark007's CODECs. They work really well with WMP.
-
CCCP is slightly more Anime centric I believe, while Shark007's set is more general files. I didn't find enough differences between either to bother swapping from CCCP though, since MPC has more features I'd find useful, so my vote goes to CCCP.
If you don't want another media player on your computer (not that it does anything really) just go with Shark007. VLC is..... no. -
killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Shark's codec pack. I also got WMP Tag Plus for my FLAC rips.

I do have one complaint about Shark codecs and that's trying to log into their forum. After 4 attempts thanks to a strict policy of so many attempts at a time, password resets, activation codes, a hard to read Captcha, and waiting 20 minutes between attempts, I was finally able to log on.
My problem was a video with two language tracks playing at the same time. Since Shark can be a little gruff in his responses, I did a search without actually posting my problem and found out I had to use the Haali Media Splitter rather than the Microsoft default. The video works fine now.
best wmp codecs? to play all sorts of files?
