i'm a total noob when it comes to these things, but i'd appreciate any help. i'm using a sony vaio laptop that i know has a DVD-RW drive. i want to burn this ~7 minute clip (it's in the .mpg format) to a blank DVD-R disc. how do i do this? i'm not sure if i need to buy some software to do it or if that software is already preinstalled on my pc. thanks!

Most Vaio's have "Click to DVD" installed (mine does, anyway). All you do is start it up and from the "File" menu select "New Project", click "Import Files", select the file and it will import it into the program so you can work with it. It's pretty easy to figure out the rest from there. You just click "Next Step" in the right hand pane and continue on editing/finishing your DVD.

i may have thanked you too soon! i got it to start working but now it's been stuck on "98% completed, approx. 1 minute remaining" for the past 10 minutes. any clue as to what that's about?

Hm, no can't say that I do. I'll have to locate an mpg file and try it myself. It's worked just fine for me with avi and wmv files. I'll have to get back to you and let you know what happens.....

Well, I tried it and it did take a little over 10 minutes to close the disc, but it worked (kids are playing it on the TV now). Did yours ever finish?

I'm fairly certain (although I'm no expert - just started doing this whole DVD creation thing myself) you have to import them into a DVD creation program as a project and then burn it to get chapters. I would think that just burning them directly to DVD would just create a data disk with the .avi files on it. Unless your DVD player is capable of reading .avi, but even then I believe you still wouldn't have chapters. Sorry I couldn't be of more help but I'm still learning. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will give you a more precise answer.
