Is it a retail key? If online activation doesnt work phone activation should.

There seem to be some programs that let you back up your activation so that you can restore it after reinstalling windows. But activation is tied to your hardware ID. If you change your motherboard this backup might not work since the hardware ID change. So it depends on what you want to upgrade in your laptop.

License-wise Retail key is reusable, OEM key is oneshot.

Well...I bought the MS Office 2010 Home and Student version retail. And if I am not mistaken, I can only install it on 3 machines. But I can reinstall on those 3 machines as many times as I want.

While the OP was referring to MS Office 2010, I wonder id what you say applies to the OS (Win 7)?

I bought a retail copy of Win7 Pro. I have it installed in my new machine which had no OS when I bought it new. My question is: can I install that on a second new laptop - which may have Win 7 Home or a Linux flavour?

You can install it to up to three machines for your own personal use. For example, your desktop, then a laptop for mobile use and perhaps a netbook for further mobile use. The key is that all three are just for your use. You cannot install to three machines for three different people to use. The license is user-specific. There's no limit to the number of times you can install, although you might hit a limit at some point on activations where you might need to call in. Can't recall the last time I heard of that for Office though.

Win7 can only be installed on one machine at a time. Period.

Uninstall it from one computer and then install on the 4th pc. Probably need phone activation but should work, three installations in use at the same time.

I think what Woofer described is accurate. I don't think you can move any one of the three installed instances of Office 2010 onto a "new" laptop (that is to say, onto a new motherboard).

Also thanks for the heads-up on the Win 7 info. Pity though. They could have at least allowed an installation on a second machine.

re: reinstall to new laptop - that should be fine. The key is that you're the only one who uses it. If you need to use one laptop instead of another, it's no skin off their back. Either way, it's still supposed to be just one person using it.

re: Win7 - An OS and software that sits on top of the OS are very different in nature. Office is somewhat portable only because people don't use just one computer anymore. MS would make it single-computer if they could, but it'd cause some outcry.

You're allowed 3 activations over the internet IIRC. Past that, the system locks you and you need to phone in.
