here is the message shown when i want to shut down the computer:

The instruction at “0x00447363” referenced memory at “0x00001c04”. The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate the program Click Cancel to debug the program

But no matter what I hit, the computer will take forever to shut down. I have to push the power button to shut it off.

I have tried to restore to a previous setting, but problem persist. Pls help!

I'm not sure if this is the fastest or easiest solution, but I would perform a repair installation first then reinstall all the drivers (making sure to check for updated ones).

The whole process could take about an hour, but will leave you will a cleaned out system, while keeping all of your personal files intact. I don't believe this is available with all OEM Windows copies that come pre-installed. Do you have a retail CD or OEM?

I am now very suspicious that the problem is due to antivirus software which is symantec on my computer

I want to uninstall the software (from control panel), but the uninstallation process was halted and couldn't finish. Is there method that can FORCEFULLY uninstall a software?

Yeah, I'd have to back up angad on this one, it seems like you might just be having a registry problem. Maybe CCleaner would help you out?

Greg's idea to repair your PC w/ an XP rescue disk should probably work too, but it sure would be a lot of hassle for a potentially minor problem.

You need to kil Symantec with fire, it's the only thing that works. What a terrible piece of software it has become.
