I recently bought a new laptop with windows vista. I already have an older desktop PC running windows XP.
Both computers are in a wireless network and I want to be able to share files between them. Now both computer are detected in "Network" (Vista) and "View workgroup computers" (XP).
I can access all the shared folder located on the laptop from my XP computer. Everything shows up perfectly in "My Network Places". The problem is, it doesn't work vice versa!
When I try to access my desktop PC via laptop, Vista asks me for a username and password. The thing is, there is NO password for my user account and even when I make one, Vista doesn't accept it.
Any suggestions are well appreciated!

I just turn the password off in the network center.

Ok, try this:
For the username, type in the name of the XP account that you log into on that machine. It's most of the time your name. If you don't log in to your computer every time you turn it on (i.e., you have it set to automatically go to that account, which by the sounds of things is the way you have it set up), go to (on the XP machine) Control Panel - User Accounts and then use the name of the primary account (the one *other* than Administrator, if it is there).
Since you say there isn't a password, don't type one in. Hit Enter.
If that doesn't work, let us know. -
@yuio: Do you mean "Password protected sharing" in the Network and Sharing Center?
@Seth: Well that's exactly what I've been trying the whole time. Doesn't work
Are there maybe some default passwords/usernames I should try? -
GOT IT!
I wasn't able to connect to the other PC because I didn't share any files on it. (the whole password thing was kinda confusing)
I turned on folder sharing and now everything works fine. -
Sometimes the most obvious thing is overlooked, even by those of us who've messed with these things for many years.
can't log on my old XP computer - Vista asks for non-existant password
