when i try to update by downloading from the windows updates, it gave me error and says that i need to change or restart the "background intelligent transfer service (BITS)".

so i went under administrative tools > service as guided by the troubleshooter, but i can't see the BITS service in there. so there's no way i can change or restart that service.. is my windows defective or i have to go somewhere else for it?
my other computer with the same windows vista doesn't have this problem..

    any ideas? :( :(

When you click Start --> Run --> Services.msc you don't see the service in the list?

Do you have the following key in registry?
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS]
    or
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet01\Services\BITS]

You can look with Start --> Run --> regedit

    If you go there:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS]

What is the data value of "Start" key? 0x0000000?

It's not under BITS...it's when you click BITS itself

Do you have "type", "description",etc.? (it's not a folder...it's on the right pane, under columns "name", "type" and "data")

I don't know if it's because you have Vista but I think that you should have "Start" under column "Name".

I suggest you to try the following: add a new reg_dword named "Start" (right-click on right pane --> new --> dword) and double-click on it after it's created to set a value of "2" which means "automatic start"

Backup your registry before doing any change if you're unsure

Yes it is....some vista services are delayed, some are not,,,,actually, it's possible there could be an automatic start entry in there as well (both entries), but if it should be in there, then the BITS repair tools above should insert those values.

I do not have a VISTA machine with me right now.

If you would like, go here and download the default services START settings for your version of Windows...just a registry patch to insert the correct values.

That's the website I was reading...

Anyway, I think that "delayedautostart" requires "start" and delayed or not, hpl912's BITS service never starts so there is a need to add "start"

You may be correct...my preference is to let the automatic tool deal with it (as there are a number of other settings that could be causing BITS to fail), rather than having someone poking in the registry.

I've used the BITS repair tool in the past to good effect.

That said, I should not have interfered while you were assisting him. A breach of protocol on my part. You obviously have the situation well in hand

It's just because I interpreted it at first like if you said "Don't listen to him. He's not right." but I know that's not what you meant :)

I'm not an expert of the BITS service or of the registry. You can give your advices

I agree with you that hpl912 should try the automatic tool first and then we'll see if everything is ok...if the tool can get the job done then it's safer and it can solve automatically other problems at the same time

thank you guys for all the help.

i tried the download from microsoft gerryf19 provided about the BITS, after downloaded and runned, it popd an error and didn't installed.

as for John B's suggestion by adding the "Start", it just worked! just finished updating my windows. :D
