I was installing SP2 for vista, rebooted and got an error. I have linux on a separate partition which I am currently on. GRUB doesnt show the recovery partition or the linux. I dont have a repair option in advanced options, nor any vista discs.
Any suggestions as to what to do?? My data is backed up so I dont mind formatting if its necessary.
Asus g50vt x-5
vista home basic 64 bit
*Would I be able to just get windows 7 and do an install instead of trying to setup vista again??

So you had Linux on your laptop and wanted to install Windows?
During installation you got an error - and now your laptop wont boot?
I suspect the boot loader is "gone" - so you can fix that with a Linux LiveCD - refer to the Linux forum for a how to.
On the Windows Install - you can buy Win7 and use that rather than Vista, the thing is, there is little real gain - no gain at all if Vista runs well - so why spend money if you have something that is just as good? (its the same OS at its core, Win7 is just tidied up a bit and cleaned up).
Generally you install Windows first followed by Linux. -
Sorry, I could have clarified a little better. Vista was already on my laptop, I was just updating it. I wanted to mention the dual boot for linux as thats what I read the error was from. When I first got the error, GRUB would load and show all the partitions, but after I fooled around in linux GRUB now only shows the two memory tests and the vista os partition.
As far as the windows 7 upgrade, I was just thinking of torrenting it. -
About the bootloader - you'll possibly have to repair it using a Linux Live CD - that should fix your problem unless something broke on the OS during the update.
cant boot up
