I have been getting a couple error messages saying I need to run chkdsk. So I go to Start>Run and. It says it needs to run on reboot, I hit yes. Then, I reboot but it doesn't run. Tried it a few times.Code:chkdsk /f
I have a dual boot setup with Ubuntu so I go through GRUB to startup XP.

try typing chkntfs /c DriveLetter: instead
-
It doesn't confirm anything when I enter that; it just brings up another entry line. Should it?
I enteredCode:chkntfs /c C:
-
It might be because of GRUB. It should work but chkdsk changes something in the boot process so it can run before startup.
You can try: chkdsk /f /x
It sometimes works without reboot. Close all programs before you run this. -
AFAIK, its stored somewhere in the registry, so I don't see how GRUB can interfere with it. -
Yeah I guess it cant really be the GRUB (sorry) since it should be something that happens after XP started booting. I know that GRUB caused my Ghost backup to fail because Ghost wanted to restart and boots its own little OS. But I guess check disk just lunches it self before all other windows processes.

I still haven't gotten chkdsk to run. I tried chkdsk /f /x as well as chkntfs /c C: . But still nothing on the reboot.

Well, I got it to run but not through Windows. I have Norton Ghost 12. So I booted into the recovery environment from the CD and there is an option to run chkdsk from there. So it ran and fixed things so now I am good and able to defrag.
