If you're using firefox...
Open up preferences...
Click on the applications tab...
Find the "mail" or "mailto" option...
Choose yahoo/gmail/or whatever you use... -

If you're using internet explorer, open up tools-> internet options-> programs and select yahoomail/gmail/livemail or whatever as your mail client.

In old Yahoo Messenger 8.x (XP only) there was an additional program that installed Yahoo mail as default email client for you (if you wanted to). It seems to be gone in the new version though...
(It was one of the few "additional features" that I have ever liked in any downloaded program, unlike a zillion toolbars, etc). -

I don't think you can do this on IE8 (working on Vista SP1)...The only way I configured it was to use and "Accelerator"...if you look in the list/ page of available accelerators, you will find the option. -
