whenever I close and then open the lid of my laptop, all the icons get rearranged and open windows get resized. it's as if the screen resolution is being decreased and then increased again.

I have a HP 8510p notebook. it has a ATI HD 2600 graphics card inside. I installed the latest catalyst driver (7.12) with the driverheaven modtool.

Try messing with your power plans - especially the options that have to do with closing the lid...

Have you used a dock or created a profile for external monitor? it could also be that.

does it do the same when you come back from sleep or hibernate?

you can try disabling TMM if you haven't already, you can find it under under #1 of the sticky http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532

you probably has already done this, but try setting to lower resolution then revert and see if that helps.

i know you don't have an external monitor, but could it be the "extend the desktop onto this monitor" is selected under display settings, for a second "non-existent" monitor?

no, when I it comes back from hibernation, everything is fine.

I also don't use vista, so I guess TMM is not relevant for me.

I also checked the extended desktop thing and it's not activated.

after some quick google'ing this came up

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=61258

same problem as yours but it's for the T60, The fixes seem to revolve around BIOs and certain applications, still worth a look. Also might be worth searching for closing lid problem related to thinkpad, saw a few threads on that issue.

    Hope these help.
