Got a laptop that wouldnt load the desktop, I could ctrl, alt, del, new task and type in explorer and the desktop would load. I wanted to run some anti spyware/virus programs but I couldn't get the net to work on it, my network places was empty. So I downloaded the programs and updated def files to a usb thumb drive but the laptop didn't do a thing when I plugged it in. So I have some recovery disks, I ran a anti spyware (adware) and it found some trojans, spyware other crap that I removed. But now whenever I get to the logon screen, I click the username put the password in, it says 'loading your personal settings' I see the desktop background for about a second then it logs of with 'closing network connection and saving your personal settings' does the same in safe mode, and I have tried 'last good know configuration' I'm thinking, use the recovery cd's I have to try and copy the files from the user account then fresh install.
Anyone help?

If you can't log on in safe mode, then I would say its time to boot into a Linux LiveCD, backup all your data, and reformat the sucker.

Its all good now, after doing some googling and using erd commander I was able to modify a reg file and now its loads the desktop as it should.

So did you re-install win XP? If not what did you do?

Yer I ended up reinstalling after backing up the data, I think there was a few other problems so fresh install seemed the best thing to do. A bit of a pain finding the video driver but found it in the end.
Although I don't remember how I got the usb working.
closing network connection XP?
