My wife got a traveling photo album that you can use to up-load pix on it from a thumb drive. The only problem is all of her pictures are of high settings (2048X1536). I need to shrink them to a smaller size, is there any free software out there that can do this?

Plenty of software will do this but understand that jpg is *already* compressed and since jpg is a lossy format, compressing it further will permanently degrade the image quality.

Now, if you take COPIES of the original images and use something like irfanview or thumber or xnview (among dozens to hundreds of options) to reduce the size/quality of the COPIES to match the exact native resolution of your electronic photo album, you will probably get some good results.

Read the docs of the photo album to determine the native resolution and color bit depth specs.

But never, ever mess with your original images.

I use this program to modify a COPY of my pictures(just like newsposter recommends also). Works off of the right click of the mouse button.
Image Resizer Powertoy Clone for Windows
It's fast and efficient. I use it for inserting photos/images into Word or PowerPoint files without making the files monster-sized.

If you just need them to be shrinked for sending via email and msn your best choice is shrink pic, it will only shrink the picture being send without touching the original picture. it is also fully automatic and can be disabled very easy

Use Paint.net and resize it to a reasonable resolution.

The command "Save for web" from Photoshop works like a charm.

I have a macro set up, so all I do is open the large .jpg with photoshop, and then with just one click it is automatically resized, saved as new, and closed.

    Automatization is nice.
