I have a hp dm1z, and my computer is getting pretty slow. It's probably due to overheating. Is this a hardware or a software problem? should I delete thing from my hard drive, or clean the fans? Do I need special tools to clean the fans?

What do you mean by slowing down? Like applications are opening really slow, etc.?

If you think your laptop is throttling due to heat, I would download a temperature monitoring program to see if that is what is causing the slow down.

Use compressed air and open the bottom of your laptop when you clean it. Clean it inside the laptop, then blow out the fans. Blow until you see nothing coming out. You should do this every few months at least, more so if your in an area with a lot of dust, or have pets.

You also probably have a buildup of bloat. Some may have been pre-installed, some downloaded. There are various ways to work with that, so google to find out what you are comfortable with. I would try defragging first, uninstalling useless programs and such, but also if you have a good backup routine, I would consider a clean reinstall of your OS and then programs, followed by your other needed data.

I am not familiar with your laptop, but if it is overheating, it is always a hardware problem. CPU, GPU, other hardware suffer greatly from heat. There are various programs that can monitor your temps. Again, find one you think you will be comfortable with, and check your temps against what other users have. I would suggest you check on the HP forums here and see what other members are getting for reference. They can tell you from experience and expertise what helps for your Lappy. Good luck, keep it clean and enjoy.

download hw monitor in my signature below and post your temperatures on here.
its advised to clean the fans and vents out every few months especially if you have a gaming lappy.
