i mistakenly formatted a hdd as dynamic hdd and backed up all my files onto it, i have since sold the computer which i formatted this hdd on. my new laptop cant recognise the hdd, and a friends xp desktop doesnt recognise it either.

how can i access the files on my dynamic formatted hdd, so i can transfer the files somewhere and convert the hdd to a basic hdd format?

i'm sure others will know how to solve this- you can probably convert the drive with acronis or partition magic, or cute partition manager(freeware)

if not, try downloading a linux live dvd(I like Ubantu) and boot into it on your old pc (you don't have to install it)- you should be able to access the files and move them to a partition or usb that you can access- but i'm tired- we partied all last nite :)

uhm, no--those don't work with dynamic volumes

When you move a dynamic disk from one computer to another it is read as "foreign" disk.

To access this foreign disk you must import it first.

To Import the Foreign Disk on Windows XP
START > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

The disk should appear as "foreign"

Right click on the Foreign Disk and select "Import Foreign Disk"

Note: Windows Xp Pro is required to do this--XP home cannot read dynamic disks.

I actually haven't done this is VISTA--not sure which versions -- if any -- support dynamic disks. My guess is Business and Ultimate do, maybe not home premium
