Yes, XP64 should work with the Core 2 Duo, although XP64 might not be a good idea since many manufacturers dont have 64bit drivers. So even if you have a system which supports 64bit, getting all the components to work will be difficult. I would suggest looking for availability of 64bit drivers for most of the laptop components before buyin the OS.

Depends on the components. "Standard stuff" like drivers for motherboard, gpu and wifi are all available for X64, but "exotic" stuff like printers, digicams, webcams and possibly special notebook-related stuff, might not be available.

I would not suggest getting XPx64. Unless you have 4GB or more of RAM, it just won't be worth it. There is a lot of trouble getting x64 to work correctly, and even if you get all your hardware to work (good luck) you'll still run into incompatible software all the time. I DO NOT suggest it. Just stick with regular XP for now. When Vista comes out, then think about going x64 on Vista.

I didn't have any problems getting my hardware working, and had no particular problems with software compatibility either. Only tricky part was antivirus, because most of that is still 32-bit only. And for a while, Daemon-Tools was a problem, but they've had a 64-bit version out for ages now.

So I'd say it's basically a tie. There's not much reason to switch to X64 (performance is about the same, though a few games add content/features/eye candy in 64-bit mode), and not much reason to stay away (most "normal" hardware and software works fine)

In other words, don't bother unless you want to experiment. :)

I am running Vista RC1 on my desktop on was just not sure if I wanted or if it would be and easy fit on my Z96J or if I should just buy the xp64 and put that on. Was like hey, for $50 why not try it out. But I think I will just throw on Vista for now and see how it goes.

    Thanks for all the comments.
