I have just this week upgraded to vista 64bit ultimate from 32bit home premium. I instatly did all the updates then installed Firefox and bit defender anti-virus suite. Im curious as to why i have a constant cpu usage of 30-40%. When nothing is open(besides normal background stuff) and laptop idle.

Check with task manager or process explorer and see what processes are behind this CPU usage. Probably then you could turn off some if you think you don't need them, with help either from this forum or google. :) But of course, if you are not sure, feel free to ask us. :) Or better get a screenshot which would also be helpful :)
