I just bought an hp dv6000z and am waiting for it to arrive. I decided to get one without a windows restore disc, but have since been thinking that maybe it would be a good idea to have one. Is it possible to create your own restore cd from the window xp partition on your hard drive?

Also I was wondering if I participate in hp's vista upgrade program will they send me a disc for vista?

I don't plan on using windows but it might be handy to have the disc in case something I need won't run on Ubuntu linux.

I would imagine that you will have an option to create a restore CD, note this is NOT a windows XP CD, it's just a restore CD that will bring the computer back to how it looked when you got it, it will NOT be a fresh windows install.

Alternative as bal3wolf said is to get Ghost or something similar (Acronis is another one) and make a backup of your system, this would be my recommended approach since it gives you backups and you can make a "restore" disk for the point in time you want to restore back to (with all your software installed) rather than just back to where HP had your machine initially.

OK that was what I was looking for, sounds like acronis or norton ghost will work . Just need to uninstall all that hp bloatware first :)

But what about that vista upgrade option? Will hp be shipping us all new cd's, or will there be some other method with which to upgrade?
