    defragmentation memory loss

    Hey,
    so i googled this and i couldnt find an answer. does any1 know why wen i defragment my computer... i lose about a full gig of memory from my HD? shouldnt you gain memory? i defrag through cmd, "defrag c: -w -v"

    You shouldnt lose or gain anything from defragmentation except a bit of extra performance. It is recommended to have at least 15% of free space minimum (I think) but it shouldnt consume HD. What is the -w command switch for? Its not listed in the help text.

    the -w just means to defrag C:... for ex -a would just give me a report...
    but everytime i defrag.. ilose about a gig... its rele weird!!.. i am losing HD memory. or at least thats wat it says in my computer wen i click on it and look at C:, which is the only drive have... so why am i lost HD space??

    This happened to me. If you're using Vista, turn off the back up and restore. ;) I think every time you defrag, Vista create a back up.

    that actually makes perfect sense, backup incase defrag goes wrong...

    I guess turn off Backup and Restore and see what happen :D

    O by the way, when you turn it off, you should gain memory back

    Better just properly set the Shadow Copy storage size.
