I just bought a new asus G50 and sometimes while i'm using it and I look at the desktop all of the icons disappear. Even when I start up, the icons don't appear.

But if I right click --> view, "show desktop icons" is checked. If I uncheck it and then activate it again, the icons do show up.

    Any idea whats up?

Try perform a virus/malware scan on your system and see. Desktop icons disappearance is caused mostly by explore.exe crash or interrupted

Try also to refresh the desktop:
. in task manager, look for explorer.exe and end it: your desktop should disappear
. with task manager still open; file->new task (or run)-> type in explorer.exe
    . monitor it

    cheers ...

Have you tried "right click on desktop" -> refresh (F5 should do it too).

That would refresh your desktop, justlike any page in a browser.

    Hi all,

I've begun having a problem in the last few days where my desktop icons disappear without warning, usually after booting up. As mentioned, this is a very recent problem and one that began happening without me making any changes to my configuration. I have installed no new programs, nor have I uninstalled any existing programs. Does anyone have any inkling as to why this would begin to happen so suddenly and seemingly without reason?

Oh, I'm using Vista Home Premium x64.

Any info would be much appreciated.

    Right-click desktop; View->Show desktop icons.

What happens when you try that, or is it greyed out?

    edit: possible reason, spyware..

edit2: I'm getting some bad deja vu..

I think I've been able to figure out what my problem is but not how to solve it yet. My 'Presentation' settings are automatically starting every time I start up my computer. I've gone into task manager and tried to keep it from starting up when I boot, but it still does it automatically every time I log onto my desktop. Does anyone know how I can keep it from starting up when I boot my notebook?

    change your power performance settings.....

Changed mine to Power4Gear High Performance and now its working fine...even on restart. I havent tried changing it back around to note the effect but at least I know what its tied to now.

    Hope this helps guys.

HERE IS FURTHER INFO ON EXACTLY WHY THIS HAPPENS

It works OK to simply enable a different power plan, but if the current plan suits your needs more than others, it is a simple fix.

-Right click the Power icon in the system tray
    -Select Power4Gear Extreme
-Click continue on the UAC prompt
-Make sure the 'Quiet Office' plan is selected
-In the lower right corner, there is an option to 'Hide Desktop Icons'. Set this to No and your problems are solved.

Urgh. Such problems show me why I only support clean installations and don't install custom vendor specific crap and tools and powerprofiles and such if not really needed.

But good to know, I've learned something new (Some friends have Asus, it may happen to them one day..).
